Matthew Gebhardt is an artist living and working in New York City. Inquiries and studio visits are welcomed. Matthew Gebhardt graduated from the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania and studied at the Slade School of Art in London, UK. Living and Working in Harlem, NYC, Matthew works primarily in painting and drawing, but also in digital film, sculpture and performance. His work has shown in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and other museums and galleries in the United States and Latin America. He also works as a producer and designer for event and production companies in New York and throughout the United States and Europe. Being brought up in the Southwestern United States, Matthew brings with deliberate line and texture, a clear and precise respect of earth based ritual behavior and mechanics; an interest in the habits and processes that go into the making of a "charged" object, as well as an interest in celebration and mourning as a means of understanding our own mortality and our relation to others. There are connections to the "Day of the Dead" celebrations in the west and Mexico as well as to the tradition of "Memento Mori' paintings. There is always care taken, a tactile and physical awareness invested in his work. A concern with both the sacred and the profane are evident, as well are the feelings of euphoria and despair.
